Welcome...
...... to my "President's Day Snowstorm II" Case History web site! The "original" President's Day snowstorm occured Feb 18-20 1979, and was indeed an historic event, with snowfall totals greater than 20 inches in parts of MD, DE and NJ. I remember that storm well, as I was living in northeastern MD at the time. Total accumulation where I lived was about 15 inches.
I'm always on the lookout for a good snowstorm so in mid-February 2003, when models and forecasts started indicating a possible major East Coast snowstorm, I was "on board". As evidence mounted that this could be a "big one", I decided to compile model forecasts and observations so that I could document the storm as a case history if it verified. And it did. Big time. So big, in fact, that it has its own name: "President's Day Snowstorm II", or PDII.
And I did write a "Case History" paper. I wrote it mostly for my own pleasure, and the information is presented in a reasonably simple manner that can be understood without a technical knowledge of meteorology. This case history is not a peer-reviewed formal paper, but more of a general interest discussion for any reader interested in snow storms. Individual chapters and Appendices can be reached via the Table of Contents section to the right. Chapters are essentially independent entities; that is they can be read in any order or even skipped entirely without diminishing the capacity to understand the remaining chapters.
I have provided (below) links to a short introduction to me and my e-mail address. I welcome any comments on my Case History. I hope everyone finds something of interest here; it has been a pleasure for me to compile and share information on this historic snowstorm.
